Hamburg Offers Discounts, Rebates to Large ShipsCreated by HButler on 12/4/2012 2:01:34 PM
Germany’s State Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Hamburg Port Authority and port service providers have agreed to significantly reduce the Port of Hamburg’s calling costs for large ships in order to strengthen the port’s competitiveness, in response to the continuing delay in deepening the channel of the River Elbe.
Terminal operators in particular granted shipping lines substantial discounts in the past years, and now, on top of that, the Hamburg Port Authority and port service providers will offer international shipping numerous discounts and rebates.
Container ships with capacities greater than 10,000 20-foot-equivalent units are particularly affected by the delay of the channel deepening because they cannot call or leave the port fully laden, said Frank Horch, Hamburg Minister for Economic Affairs, in a written statement.
