Steel Fuels Growth at Houston

Total cargo volume increased 5 percent, or 104,000 tons, year-over-year at the Port of Houston in November and is up 8 percent year-to-date, Executive Director of the Port of Houston Authority Len Waterworth announced Wednesday.

Steel, which has increased 29 percent year-to-date, is primarily fueling the growth, but Waterworth noted those volumes are softening and could grow at a slower pace in early 2013.

General cargo at port authority facilities increased 86,000 tons, or 3 percent year-to-date, and operating income of $22.4 million is up 84 percent from a year earlier.
