Maersk to Implement Surcharge in Event of ILA Strike

Created by HButler on 12/19/2012 1:13:53 AM

Maersk Line recently announced that it will implement a congestion surcharge in the event of an International Longshoremen’s Association strike at East and Gulf coast ports, which would begin Dec. 29, when their contract is set to expire.

If there is a strike, effective Dec. 29, 2012, the container shipping company will implement a surcharge of $800 per 20-foot equivalent unit, $1,000 per standard 40-foot equivalent unit, $1,125 per high capacity FEU and $1,266 per 45-foot-equivalent unit.

Maersk will implement the same surcharges for West Coast exports to the world, starting Jan. 21, 2013, if the strike is still ongoing at that point in time.

If there is no strike, these surcharges will be nullified, the carrier said.
