The Port of Virginia handled 2.1 million 20-foot-equivalent units in 2012, an increase of 9.8 percent compared with 2011, the Virginia Port Authority reported. It was the port’s second best year in its history in terms of cargo volume.

Only 22,479 TEUs separated 2012 from 2007, which was the port’s best year on record for TEUs.

Total container throughput in 2012 was 1.2 million, rising 9.8 percent from 2011, and total rail container volume was 385,804, jumping 16.8 percent year-over-year. Ship calls were also up by 7.4 percent.

“The Port of Virginia posted an 18.9 percent increase in containers and a 20.4 percent increase in TEUs handled in December 2012 compared to 2011,” said Rodney W. Oliver, VPA’s interim executive director, in a written statement.
