Container Volume Slips 0.3 Percent at Antwerp

Antwerp’s container traffic dipped 0.3 percent in 2012 from 2011 and total tonnage was down 1.6 percent as the Belgian port managed to contain the impact of economic slowdown across Europe.

Container traffic reached 8.64 million 20-foot-equivalent units, and total throughput was 184.1 million metric tons, down from 187.2 million tons in 2011, according to the port authority.

“The figures are slightly better than the provisional results ... showing that the port is managing to stand up well in the current climate affecting the shipping industry and the general economy,” a port official said.

Roll-on, roll-off traffic jumped 13 percent to 4.8 million tons, and the number of cars handled was 14.8 percent higher year-over-year at 1.24 million units.

Conventional cargo slumped 14.2 percent to 10.9 million tons, mainly reflecting the contraction in steel shipments.

Liquid bulk traffic dipped 1.1 percent to 45.3 million tons while dry bulk shipments were 0.1 percent higher at 19.1 million tons.
