Cochin Terminal Trucker Strike Ends

Created by HButler on 2/20/2013 4:53:12 PM

Normal operations resumed late last Thursday at India’s Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal, a DP World facility in Cochin Port, following the end of a nearly two-week strike by container trailer drivers.

Unionized trailer crews walked off the job Feb. 4, calling for wage increases and improved working conditions.

The settlement on a new wage contract came after marathon negotiations between union leaders, truck-owner group representatives and terminal officials. The intervention of state labor minister Shibu Baby John and ports minister K. Babu also helped resolve the impasse.

DP World Cochin officials said all efforts were being made to extract inbound containers stranded in the terminal because of the stoppage.
