Port of Tacoma reported container volume in January rose 36 percent year-over-year, from 109,170 20-foot-equivalent units in 2012 to 148,707 TEUs in 2013.
Monthly containerized imports increased 45 percent, and exports were up nearly 44 percent, as shippers prepared for the Lunar New Year. The volume also continued to reflect the addition of the Grand Alliance and its associated carriers.
The Washington port’s domestic container volume posted a nearly 5 percent gain in January, while foreign containers increased 49 percent.
Additionally, intermodal rail lifts jumped 51 percent, reflecting the strong container traffic.
