Barge
Barges are flat-bottomed boats designed to carry cargo on inland waterways (per
Transportation Institute). They generally lack engines and are propelled by a tug. Barges are used
for transporting bulk goods or oversize (project) cargo, and container-on-barge services exist as well (see, for example,
Osprey Line). According to the
American Waterways Operators, the national trade association for the U.S. tugboat, towboat, and barge industry, the industry
transports 20% of the United States' coal, more than 60% of U.S. grain exports, and most of New England's home heating oil and gasoline.
